The Beaujolais wine region is to the south of Burgundy and the wines are made from the Gamay grape which is a cross between Pinot Noir and an obscure grape called gouais blanc. In general, the red wines of Beaujolais have a pronounced fruit character on the wild berry and cherry end of the spectrum with low tannins which make them pair well with lighter meats and even fish. The Beaujolais and the Beaujolais -Villages wines are friendly and straightforward and the Cru Beaujolais, those taking their name from their village, are more serious, may be aged and have a savory, spiciness.
